Johanna has studied and practiced yoga for 12 years, primarily with Eileen Muir at Karuna Yoga Center in Northampton. She also brings 12 years of dance and movement study and practice to her teaching. She is trained in the Iyengar Style of Yoga, developed by BKS Iyengar of Pune, India, and completed an Iyengar Yoga Level 1Teacher Training in 2001. This approach emphasizes correct alignment and encompasses the eight limbs of yoga, toning the internal organs and creating balance between flexibility, strength and spiritual upliftment. Johanna’s teaching had more recently been influenced by the Anusara Yoga teaching of John Friend, and the body-mind centering teaching of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen and Patti Townsend.

Quotes from Students

"I like Johanna's class because she is lighthearted and fun. Johanna effectively cultivates an atmosphere of non-competitiveness. I am now more able to compare myself to my own progress rather than to the others in the class. I've been able to bring some of the things I've learned in class into the rest of my life. It has made me more focussed and calm."

"The beginner's class has been great. Johanna goes slowly enough to really learn the fundamentals of each posture. she gives plenty of time and encouragement to master each one."

"When I studied at the School of American Ballet this past summer, they recommended I take yoga to improve flexibility and to relax me. My current ballet instructor believes that my ballet technique has improved so much in Johanna's class that he wants all of the advanced ballet students to take yoga."
