Selections from the book...

From the intro:

The grrrls are back and it's time to listen up!

These poems are collected from the writings of the grrrls who gather in Florence every Monday afternoon to write together and dance together. Now in its fifth year, Grrrls Speak is going strong. The group this year numbered seven-grrrls from Northampton, Worthington, Wendell, and Amherst.

The grrrls write in their own words, from their own grrrl point of view, pushing up against that voice of censorship and judgment that manages to find its way into most of us somewhere along the line, and coming sometimes to that sweet, true, secret voice of the heart and the soul of the real grrrl inside. I offer structures and ideas and prompts for writing, bringing poems by some of my favorite poets to inspire, but one rule of the group is that you always get to write whatever you want. So here's what we've got: the provocative, poignant, furious, tough, tender voices of a few real grrrls.

This year we parked ourselves at the Northampton Farmer's Market one Saturday morning in May and wrote "Poems for a Dollar" to help raise funds for future projects-you give us a title for a poem (and a dollar) and we'll write you a poem. The day was a smashing success, and the writers were smashingly exhausted after taking on titles like "After a Night of Not Sleeping" and "My Dog Skippy" and "Where should I send my dollar?" and "Night Sky, Facing East" and "Garcia y Vega at the Greek Theater." We were so full with poem orders that we had to take email addresses and mail them later!

Thanks also to the third year of funding from the Art Angels, which supported the printing of this book, and a weekend retreat at Earthdance Workshop and Retreat Center in Plainfield, where we had long, juicy hours together to write and dance and sing and walk in the woods and notice how great we all are. And great we are!

Thank you for supporting our work! We hope you enjoy reading these poems. Share them with other grrrls! And write your own poem-right now-today-don't wait-go ahead! Pick up a pen, here's the title: "How the grrrls rocked my world."
